In my current studies and research I have come across the history of when Nixon, in 1971, declared war on cancer. He made a promise that he would put money into research to find a cure, which has not changed a thing and cancer rates continue to reach record highs. And, the irony here is that the more money they through at it, the more cases of cancer we have today. The leading causes of death in our country was first, heart disease, then cancer and third, our own medicine. Now heart disease and cancer fight for the number one spot. Cancer which was thought to be a disease of the elderly can now strike anyone anytime, but there is a reason for that which I will get to later.
Research or discoveries in cancer that we don’t hear about are the ones so natural it cannot be patented and the money doctors, hospitals and pharmacies would lose for cancer treatment would be in the billions. So the war is not necessarily on cancer but the mindset of money. We need to stop treating symptoms and start treating people. The thought of just taking a pill to cure what ails us has to stop. You cannot just lose weight by taking a pill, or lowering blood pressure, cholesterol or any other disease. The cause is still there, and the only thing that has changed is the symptom.
Now a little information about mesothelioma cancer and one man who overcame the odds: a cancer that is typically caused by exposure to asbestos. Over 2,000 cases are diagnosed each year and life expectancy is about one year. James “Rhio” O’Connor who was diagnosed with this type of cancer bucked the odds and lived for over six years. He did this not by chemotherapy or surgery, but instead by natural means. James made drastic changes in his diet, using vitamins, enzymes and natural means to boost his own body’s immune system to help him fight this disease. As little as 20 years ago people would be arrested for not following conventional medicine when fighting cancer. And, now many people are becoming more aware of natural ways to cure themselves or now even prevent cancer such as the methods used by James “Rhio” O’Connor. Conventional medicine should be the alternative and not the norm – other countries recognize this – however; our country is based on a failed healthcare system. This is really not that hard to believe considering the third leading cause of death in our country is our own medicine. If insurance is really concerned about the bottom line then what better concept than to keep the people healthy. Simple enough concept… right!
We are a nation based on quick fixes and instant gratification. So when someone hears the diagnosis of cancer the emotions one goes through can vary. You are bombarded with information and doctors telling you “here’s what we are going to do” without really considering all options. Fear and not knowing can prompt a person into putting too much trust into a doctor. There is a reason they call in practicing medicine. One of my favorite quotes is “If you have only been trained to use a hammer, than the whole world looks like a nail”. Doctors have been trained to treat symptoms and not the person as a whole. You have a headache, take an aspirin. You have high blood pressure, take this pill. You have high cholesterol, here is another pill. Instead of determining the cause and treating the person holistically, you will never be rid of what ails you. Doctors receive less than 20 hours (yes, 20 hours) of training on nutrition so it’s no wonder a doctor’s first course of action is to prescribe a pill instead of looking at your diet. I do not want to say this is true of all doctors as we are starting to see a slight shift in doctors studying and learning more about natural methods of treating patients before considering medication and surgery. You are probably asking what nutrition has to do with cancer.
Over the past several decades as more research is done, people and hopefully doctors will become more educated on the effects of nutrition and diet on disease. If you think about it many diseases are caused by deficiency or toxicity of a vitamin or mineral. For example, scurvy a disease from lack of vitamin C, was simply cured by adding more vitamin C to the diet. I realize this simplified example and diseases are becoming more complex as our diet and nutrition needs become more and more depleted.
In today’s society of fast food, processed food, animals given growth hormones and antibiotics, and our quickly depleting vitamin and minerals in our earth, are taking a toll on our diet and nutritional intake. There are over 50 different vitamins and minerals that our body needs and yet the fertilizer used to start a new crop, only 2 or 3 different minerals are put back into that next crop. You would have to eat 35 apples today to get the same nutritional value as an apple grown in the 50s or 60s. Studies have been done that show heavy amounts of animal proteins can cause tumor cells to grow and when the animal proteins were reduced to below 10% in the diet, those tumor cells shrunk. Our kids are getting 99% of their calorie intake from processed foods. That means only about 1% comes from fresh fruits and vegetables.
In our country, 1 out of every 4 people is obese and more than that are considered fat. More and more kids have cholesterol, diabetes, and more diseases that were once considered a disease of the elderly. More study needs to be done on diet and nutrition and not on some synthetic pill that someone can take for their symptoms. We have already seen many pharmaceutical recall prescriptions and vaccines – we just do not know the side effects of all these prescriptions. Or thinking that cooking our bodies with radiation will cure us of cancer is the answer. We need to look at not just what we put into our bodies but what we put on our bodies.

We are starting to see a paradigm shift in our healthcare as more people are questioning medical diagnosis and treatment. People are taking more responsibility for their healthcare. However, this is only a start as insurance, doctors and pharmaceutical companies still drive this force based on dollars and not a cure. Unless that cure comes at a cost that can be patented; in other words un-natural, we will remain an unhealthy nation where cancer rates, as well as other diseases will continue to rise.
